In the sixth century, Buddhist monks and Taoist shamans had a contest for the right to convert Korea to their faith.
The Buddhists won by climbing a
Ladder of Swords. Today, fifteen centuries later, the way of the Tao coexists with the other major religions in Asia:
Buddhism, Confucianism, Shinto, Christianity and Islam.
On May 19, 2006, Dr. Wilson honored the memory of the events of the sixth century by presenting The Two Paths. In recognition of Buddhist practice, he climbed the
Ladder of Swords, his bare feet pressing down on the razor-sharp steel. To honor the way of the Tao, he showed a scroll bearing hexagrams
from the I Ching, part of which is shown below.
